Letter of ABS-CBN’s Ma. Socorro Vidanes to the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas:
We write in reply to your letter dated 10 August, requesting ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation to comment on the complaint of Movie and Television Review and classification board (MTRCB) Chairperson Ma. Consoliza P. Laguardia, and an undated statement of Jerry Yap, President of the Alyansa ng Filipinong Mamamahayag (AFIMA).
The said complaints and statement both refer to the 03 August 2009 episode of the television program Wowowee, wherein the funeral cortege of the late President Corazon C. Aquino was exhibited as an inset in portions of the said program. The MTRCB letter alleges that Mr. Revillame “appeared to arrogantly demand the removal of the inset screen showing the funeral cortege”. The Honorable MTRCB Chairperson then opined that the said act was “desecrating the dead” and thus, “seems to be in violation of Article 20, Section 2, of the Broadcast Code of the Philippines”.
On the other hand, the AFIMA statement states that “for him to deman the removal of the little window screen showing the funeral march of the woman who got ABS-CBN back from Marcos is a blasphemy of democracy, an act despicable xxx.” It appears, therefore, that the complaint and statement are both based on the alleged disrespect by Mr. Revillame to the late former President Aquino.
It is ABS-CBN’s position that there was no disrespect of the dead by Mr. Revillame. When the funeral cortege of former President Aquino was shown as an inset during Wowowee, Mr. Revillam expressed his opinion of the inappropriateness of the simultaneous exhibition of both the funeral cortege and Wowowee, and his preference that only one or the other be shown.
In expressing his opinion and preference, though, Mr. Revillame did not show disrespect for former President Aquino, In fact, the contrary is true. In making his statements, Mr. Revillame wanted to give due respect to former President Aquino and her funeral cortege
Indeed, in Filipino culture, customs, and tradition, ceremonies involving the dead are solemn and sober. Thus, the laughter, jokes, and happiness usually seen in a program like Wowowee would appear to be inappropriate when viewed together with the funeral cortege. On the one hand, the Filipino people are mourning the death of a loved and respected former President, and on the other hand, Wowowee is trying to entertain its audience.
It appears, therefore, that Mr. Revillame’s issue was with the inappropriateness of Wowowee and the funeral cortege being shown together, and not with the funeral cortege itself. While it may be argued that Mr. Revillame could have expressed his thoughts in a better way and that it would have been better to raise them privately, instead of the public manner in which he did, such was not disrespectful of the dead and not constitute an offense under the KBP Broadcast Code of the Philippines.
We trust the foregoing comment satisfactorily establishes that there was no violations of the KBP Broadcast Code of the Philippines.
Very truly yours,
MA. SOCORRO V. VIDANES

its very obvious that you are shielding your star, mr.willie revillame for his act towards the cortege of our late pres. cory aquino, if for you that was not a disrespectful act, well, for us , audience, he acted very rude and acted as he was the big boss of his studio.. or maybe he really is thast why he seems wala na syang kinatatakutan, hope you sill reprimand his actions if you want to continue your good service to viewers
Note: “Indeed, in Filipino culture, customs, and tradition, ceremonies involving the dead are solemn and sober.”
Reaction: If he doesn’t want anything sad, solemn and/or sober then why does the show features people crying over their problems and such?
Note: “Thus, the laughter, jokes, and happiness usually seen in a program like Wowowee would appear to be inappropriate when viewed together with the funeral cortege.”
Reaction: Is it really necessary for a “funny or happy” show to have sad moments every time it is aired? Remember the part of the show when people are expressing their feelings which eventually, and will always, lead to tears. What’s the difference of that from airing a funeral cortege which will happen only once?
Note: “While it may be argued that Mr. Revillame could have expressed his thoughts in a better way and that it would have been better to raise them privately, instead of the public manner in which he did, such was not disrespectful of the dead and not constitute an offense under the KBP Broadcast Code of the Philippines.”
Reaction: So as long as he never violated any code or such, he can do as he please? Is it even more destructive to the viewers and to the reputation of a person itself to act “rudely” on camera? Is this always allowed as long as you don’t break any code of law or the like and also as long as the person is being idolized for his fame?
Final Words: It can’t be helped. His fame will only last as long as the show is able to feed people’s desire to live and be entertained. However, one day for sure, you may never know, ’cause that the great Rome is already stepping over thin line.
i agree to the above comment…. we are the viewing public and Willie’s unconcious action during that time was very uncalled for. truly, it’s a manifestation of the lack of ethics on his part and a full blown head for having still in ABS-CBN despite all the bad things that he caused the station. the mere sight of him made my stomach turn upside down.
Willie Revillame just expressed his concern for what other people would comment on the simultaneous showing of the Wowowee show and the funeral cortege of the late Pres. Cory Aquino. The fact that Kris Aquino who is known to be one of the most frank personality in show business did not get offended by what Willie has commented just shows thatshe appreciated the respect that Willie would want to be shown on air to the funeral cortege of her mother. There was really an inappropriateness of the simultanous showing and I felt while watching it that Willie was having a hard time making people laugh and joked around. He was not himself when that show was airing. He should be back on the show for Wowowee is becoming “dry” everyday. Sorry . . .
Mabuhay and ABS-CBN. Maraming Salamat po.
It’s no longer about the ratings to reason that this poor-mannered guy is indispensable to the network, but money. That stupid show can sustain itself catering to small advertisers and that means aside from mainstream ads, the well just keeps going. I just hope that these people would look more on the basis of one’s moral disposition than how much money one can bring in. I wonder what “In the Service of the Filipino Worldwide” for their slogan means. If this is one example of their service, no thanks.
